ORGANIZED LABOUR IN NKWANTA SOUTH PETITIONS GOVERNMENT FOR URGENT ACTION TO END PROTRACTED CONFLICT

Representatives of organized labour unions, professional associations, and workers in the Nkwanta South Municipality have presented a petition to the Government of Ghana, calling for immediate and decisive action to bring a lasting end to the protracted conflict that has plagued the municipality for years.

According to the petition, the recurring violence has claimed lives, destroyed property, displaced hundreds of residents, disrupted economic activities, and severely affected the delivery of essential public services. The labour unions noted that recent incidents have resulted in deaths and injuries, the closure of schools, the relocation of teachers and other professionals, and a sharp decline in commercial activities across the municipality.

While acknowledging the efforts made by the Government and the security agencies to restore peace, the petitioners emphasized that the current security situation demands stronger, more comprehensive, and sustained interventions to guarantee lasting peace and stability.

The petition highlights several major concerns, including the continued loss of innocent lives, the disruption of education, the collapse of economic activities, unsafe working conditions for public sector employees, and the displacement of more than 353 households and over 764 individuals in February 2026. It also points to the negative impact of the conflict on development projects and investments within the municipality.

To address the situation, organized labour is urging the Government to establish a permanent conflict-resolution framework involving traditional authorities, community leaders, youth groups, security agencies, religious leaders, and other key stakeholders. They also called for strengthened security operations, enhanced intelligence gathering, long-term peacebuilding initiatives, and the establishment of permanent security infrastructure in the municipality.

As part of the petition, organized labour issued a formal notice to the Government, stating that if concrete and measurable steps toward a lasting resolution are not demonstrated within thirty (30) days of receiving the petition, workers across the municipality will be compelled to embark on a total withdrawal of services until adequate measures are taken to guarantee the safety and security of both workers and residents.

The petitioners stressed that the intended industrial action is not aimed at undermining public administration but rather at drawing urgent national attention to a crisis that continues to threaten the lives, livelihoods, and future development of the Nkwanta South Municipality.

Organized labour expressed hope that the Government will respond promptly and decisively to restore lasting peace, protect lives and property, and create an environment that will allow residents, workers, businesses, and educational institutions to thrive once again.
